Learn to understand and truly appreciate the legacy of Australia’s colonial history in Maldon, Castlemaine and Bendigo and gain some valuable insight into Australia’s first transport route, all be it in superior comfort on our overnight paddle steamer cruise along the majestic Murray River, topped off with visits to the regions’ premier food and wine producers. Day 1 Gold Rush Towns: Echuca
We head north through the golden heart of Victoria. First up is historic, picturesque Castlemaine, a bustling town renowned for its rich gold rush history and eclectic artistic heritage. Its grand public buildings, amazing architecture and wide streets are testament to a bygone era, a theme continued in beautiful Maldon, also on our itinerary today.
In Maldon we have the opportunity to unearth some hidden treasures at one of the many antique shops and discover why this is a favourite destination for many day trippers escaping the big smoke.
Lunch is served at the Shamrock Hotel in Bendigo before continuing our journey north to Echuca, Australia’s paddle steamer capital. Steeped in history the twin towns of Echuca and Moama are home to the world’s largest fleet of operating riverboats. Learn why its spectacular Port set to a background of majestic river red gums, was originally the busiest on the Murray. We board the PS Emmylou our unique accommodation for the night. A magical experience like no other, the cruise will engage all your senses from the moment we arrive. A welcome cocktail in hand, the sun sets over the river, as we listen to the river birds evening chorus and eagerly await our chef prepared 5 course dinner menu before turning in for the night with the serene sounds of the river providing the perfect lullaby.

Day 2 Echuca – Rutherglen
After our return to the Port of Echuca this morning, we continue our journey together and head east into ‘Sun Country’, the region is blessed with year round sunshine and some of Australia’s finest gourmet produce. It’s often referred to as Australia’s food bowl, as the road meanders along the fertile countryside on the banks of the mighty Murray. Our first stop today is fabulous Locheilan Farmhouse Cheese and their multi award winning cheeses, lovingly produced in house by is owners. We enjoy a delicious sample platter before heading to what has become a worldwide sensation, the unmissable Cactus Country. Visitors from around the globe have flocked to explore these prickly gardens. You will have the opportunity to taste some prickly delights such as cactus ice cream or cactus cake. Next up is historic Byramine Homestead Brewery & Cider House, a testament to those early pioneering days. We enjoy a hearty “ploughman’s lunch” and a sample of the boutique beer, wine and cider range in rustic surrounds. We stop in at Rich Glen Olive Estate farmgate, a family owned business and specialist in olive manufacturing and the gourmet food products, where we sample some of their homemade delights. Our final stop for the day is Lake Moodemere Estate where we enjoy the magnificent views over the vineyard before reaching Tuileries in the heart of Rutherglen, our destination for the evening. We dine together sharing stories of our mutual adventures.

Day 3 Rutherglen – Glenrowan – Melbourne
This morning we discover Rutherglen, a historic wine growing region, invigorated by a crop of young and bold winemakers. We won’t go thirsty and there is something for everyone. The region is the unchallenged capital of fortified wines in Australia, yet there are also plenty of robust reds and crisp whites produced here, waiting to indulge us. We visit the wonderfully imposing All Saints Estate, its grand architecture; superbly tended gardens and avenue of majestic elms make for one of the most spectacular vineyard settings in Australia. Next up is the marvellous Corowa Whisky and Chocolate factory, a renovated 1920s flour mill, which will charm us on entry. We sample the delicious Belgian style organic chocolate and tour the whisky distillery, where we witness the production of high quality Australian whisky. Lunch is served before we commence our trip south.
On the return journey we head into bushranger territory. We learn about the notorious Ned Kelly and his gang which roamed the area in the 1880s in the Glenrowan Heritage Siege precinct before arriving back in Melbourne after an eventful 3 days.
